Cashless system is now on the cards
http://www.thechronicle.com.au/
Barry Langton is 71 and has paid bills with cash his whole life.
So, you can imagine his surprise when a retail worker told him, “We don't accept cash.”
Mr Langton was paying a bill for a family member at the Grand Central Medibank Private retail centre on Monday.
He couldn't believe it when the staff member told him his cash was no good.
“I thought the Aussie dollar was bad, but I didn't think it was that bad,” Mr Langton joked yesterday.
“I just couldn't believe it.
“I've never had any trouble with cash in my whole life, not even in countries overseas.”
Mr Langton's wife Norma said she always thought cash was the best option.
“Not everyone has a card these days,” she said.
“It's a bit tough when they don't want your cash.”
Medibank Private Queensland State manager John Rossdale said the decision to remove cash from the retail centres was based on a huge reduction in demand for the service.
“The vast majority of member transactions is conducted via electronic and telephone banking,” he said.
“In saying that, we do understand that some of our members prefer to pay bills by cash and we have set up an arrangement with Australia Post.
Mr Rossdale said members could pay their premiums with cash at any Australia Post office. They just need to take their renewal notice.
