Have you bought a new home and you want to create a beautiful garden for your landscape? First, you need to work on the garden area. A successful garden requires a lot of planning and hard work to start. However, you still need to consider a lot of factors before you start planning in your dream garden. Things such as the size of the garden, the skills you have, the type of design you want, are some of the things you need to consider. Also, you need to plan for the foundation plants, ground covers, perennials, annuals, vines, trees, and shrubs. Take this into consideration as you plan. In this article, you will learn of six necessities to add to a new landscape.

1. Foundation planting

Foundation planting is very important as it helps to soften the straight lines of the building. This is the small shrubs and trees that you plant around the perimeter of the house. Also, they help ease the transition from the house to the flower bed and lawn. As you plan on the best foundation plants, you need to consider those that are suitable all-year-round, instead of having them looking dead during some seasons. Additionally, the plantings that you choose should not grow too large for the specific spot. For this reason, how you plan to space them should not interfere with the foundation of the house with their roots or tend to grow into the house. As well as block windows and entrances when they are mature. Therefore, try some yews in a row as they keep their foliage and color year-round, and you can add a tall evergreen to create a timeless arrangement.

2. Annuals and perennials

Adding perennials and annuals to a garden is necessary as you plan a new garden. Perennials are a favorite to most people as they are just expensive initially but then you can have them year after year afterward. Hence they save you money and time as you do not have to replant them again. Some common perennials like tulips are easy to grow and are a lovely addition to your garden. There are so many varieties that you can choose depending on their blooming times as some bloom all season long while others bloom for two weeks. It is important, however, to enquire if the perennial survive the winter, if not, know how the foliage looks like and if it gives it structure. As for annuals, they die after one year, but they have advantages as they are less expensive in comparison to perennials. Also, most bloom mid to late spring, others in late winter or early spring, and you get their color for months. So, for annuals and perennials to thrive, consider those that do well in your region and other important requirements.

3. Aim to plant trees

Do you admire trees in various gardens? In a new garden, you can have your own, but you need to know what you don’t want and want in a tree. Make this decision before you go to the nursery to choose one for your garden. Things to consider are the height, fruits, or berries if it drops its leaves and for what period, the width, disease issues, the shade it will create when it matures, water needs, and the list is endless. Do thorough research on the particular tree you want to plant. So as you know how to incorporate it in your garden space. Trees can be deciduous or evergreen. If you prefer to have deciduous trees they are better as they offer more variety, beautiful leaves, flowers, and fruits. While evergreens are amazing too, especially if you need some green in your garden all year round or for a specific place.

4. Ground covers

Ground covers in a garden are important as they require less maintenance in comparison to a lawn. While planning on where to have the ground covers they are best planted where there is minimal traffic. It is not hard to choose the best ground covers as all low growing plants that spread are ideal as ground covers. Choose one that grows vigorously and thick, as it will need less care, watering, and weeding. Besides, consider the spread, height, thickness of growth habit, water and sun needs, foliage color in all seasons, among other things. Also, ask how the ground cover you have chosen will coexist with other plants that are near it. Since some ground covers choke out less aggressive plants near them due to how vigorous they are and you have to plant them alone. Some types of common ground covers you can consider are lily-of-the-valley, spreading juniper, ajuga, hosta, among others.

5. Plant shrubs as borders

When you compare shrub borders to flower borders, the former is better. They are low maintenance alternatives to flower borders. Plus, you can choose to have shrubs on the entire garden or just a portion of it. However, you need to consider the bloom time of the shrub, requirements of soil and sun, pruning needs, seasonal color, and leaf form, and the size as well, among other important factors. These too are either deciduous or evergreen just as trees. In a way that belies their size, they can fill a landscape with fragrance, color, greenery, and flowers.

6. Vines

Whether you have a small or large garden. It is necessary to consider planning for some vines. Vines are beneficial as they add greenery to your garden, create privacy, use little ground space, and create vertical interest. If you have a small garden they are the best to make the most of your limited space. Select an annual or perennial vine depending on how it attaches itself to its support. Some vines twine, others send out tendrils, and others cling with holdfasts. Choose any from these types depending on the clinging style you prefer. Some examples of vines you can choose are honeysuckle, morning glories, clematis, ivies, the list is endless.
