A quick guide to broadband

Broadband is a wide bandwidth transmission of data (sending or receiving) over a high-speed internet connection. Bandwidth here refers to how much data is being transmitted over that internet connection in a particular period. Broadband internet access is always on and is faster than dial-up access. There are several types of broadband connections, and they use different high-speed transmission technologies. These technologies include Cable, Wireless, Fiber, Satellite, and Digital Subscriber Line (DLS).

Why get broadband

You may feel that your dial-up internet connection works fine for you, but here are a few reasons why you should consider switching to broadband;

1.    A dial-up internet connection engages the phone line when in use. This is because it uses the public switched telephone network (PSTN) to connect to an ISP (Internet service provider). However, your broadband network will not engage your phone line. In fact, you can opt for an internet phone service and therefore opt out of using traditional lines altogether.

2.    As was mentioned, a broadband connection is always on. This means you don’t need to connect and disconnect it at the start and end of each session.

3.    A broadband connection is more reliable than a dial-upconnection when you are doing something that requires a high-speed internet connection consistently, for example, when playing most popular online games today.

How to pick a broadband package

There are some factors to consider when picking a broadband package. Some of them are discussed below.

Speed

The speed here refers to how quickly you can upload and download data using your internet connection. Internet service providers understand that most users will spend more time downloading data than uploading it; therefore, they may give you higher download speeds than upload speeds. If you have several users using your internet connection, opt for a package with higher speeds to accommodate everyone.

Usage

Another thing to consider when choosing a broadband package is how much data you use and for what. If your broadband connection has more than one user, consider how much data they use as well. If you are a single user with low data usage, for example, if you only use your data to browse social media and a few web pages, you can select a package with a low usage limit. However, if you use large amounts of data to stream movies, download and play internet games, or if the other users do so, it would be best to go for an unlimited data bundle.

Bundling

Many broadband providers offer other services besides an internet connection and bundle these services into one big package. Many will offer TV, phone and broadband. There will be variations to these services. For example, one service provider may offer weekend calls and a few TV channels, while another may offer calls anytime and many TV channels. They do this because they understand that it may be cheaper and easier for you to bundle these services together and pay one monthly bill.

How do you pick a broadband provider?

Here are three factors to help you pick a broadband provider.

They must be available in your area

You may find a fantastic broadband provider with great prices and fast speeds, but they are useless to you if their services aren’t available in your area.

The cost

The service provider’s costs will vary depending on the bundle you pick. For example, an unlimited data bundle will definitely be more expensive than a limited usage data bundle.

The speed

You want to use a provider that gives you the best internet speed. If you have many skype meetings, and you spend your evening streaming Netflix videos, you should opt for a package with higher speeds.

It may be time to switch from your old dial-up connection to broadband. Be sure to compare several broadband providers so that you can get the one that serves you best and meets your needs optimally. That may mean a little research, but the pay off when you have theright provider will make the work worthwhile.
