American Curiosity With The Occult: Flirting With Darkness In The Name Of "Fun"

Despite America's obsession with technology and progress, millions are still turning to the ancient darkness of the occult -- dismissing it all as "just for fun." According to Pew Research's latest report, a staggering 30% of U.S. adults admit to consulting astrology, tarot cards, or fortune tellers at least once a year. Even more alarming, 43% of women between the ages of 18 and 49 say they believe in astrology.
Let that sink in.
Nearly one in three Americans is opening the door -- even if just a crack -- to spiritual forces that God explicitly warns us to avoid. They might dismiss it as harmless amusement, but Scripture calls it something else: rebellion, deception, and spiritual danger.
The Numbers Don't Lie -- But Spirits Do
Pew's findings revealed that 20% of adults engage in these occult practices mostly "for fun," while another 10% do so because they genuinely believe they're receiving helpful insights. Whether it's horoscopes, tarot readings, or dabbling in witchcraft through "manifestation" rituals on TikTok, the common denominator is a yearning to know something hidden -- to gain insight, to find hope, or to control uncertainty.
But here's the problem: the spirits behind these practices are not neutral.
Ex-psychic Jen Nizza, who now boldly proclaims Christ, has warned that these tools aren't harmless curiosities -- they're channels for demonic influence. "Whether you believe or not... you're opening a demonic door," she says. "If you're going to use a tool of divination, you're going outside of God's boundaries."
And she would know. After spending decades as a medium -- thinking she was doing good and believing her "gift" came from God -- she finally came face to face with the dark spiritual reality behind the readings. She describes how demons would follow her, feed her accurate information, and use her like a "PA system for the evil one." Now a born-again Christian, she says plainly: this is a battle for souls.
Flirting with Darkness Opens More Than Curiosity
The danger of these practices is not just theoretical -- it's spiritual and eternal.
God does not mince words about this. In Deuteronomy 18:10-12, we are commanded:
"Let no one be found among you who... practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells... Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord."
Why such strong language? Because the occult is not pretend. It taps into a real, unseen world. Demons are real. Satan is real. And when we seek answers from any source besides God, we are pledging allegiance -- knowingly or not -- to the kingdom of darkness.
Many who play with tarot cards or read horoscopes may not feel like they're worshipping the devil. But Satan doesn't care whether you call it worship. He only cares that you turn your eyes from God. He will gladly offer a false sense of comfort, identity, or power -- all while quietly leading you into bondage, depression, confusion, and spiritual deception.
Why Do So Many Fall for It?
Because we are wired to want answers. We want to understand ourselves. We want to know our future. We want comfort in the chaos and clarity in the fog. That's not a flaw -- it's a design feature. But when we bypass the Creator in search of these things, we settle for counterfeit direction, and we forfeit divine truth.
In Isaiah 8:19, God rebukes this very tendency:
"When someone tells you to consult mediums and spiritists... shouldn't a people inquire of their God?"
Yes. We should.
The Bible Offers What the Occult Never Can
The Bible doesn't just give us personal guidance -- it gives us eternal truth. God doesn't just offer us vague promises or shifting energies. He offers prophetic scripture that is 100% accurate, direction that is always wise, and a personal relationship with the One who holds the future.
Where the occult whispers uncertainty, God thunders promises. Where horoscopes shift daily and tarot cards offer cryptic riddles, the Word of God is unchanging. Jesus didn't leave us blind. He gave us the Holy Spirit -- the Spirit of Truth -- to guide us into all truth (John 16:13).
And as for the future? The Bible is not silent. Bible prophecy lays out not just personal destiny but the trajectory of nations, the rise and fall of empires, the return of Christ, the final judgment, and the eternal reign of God. No astrologer can match that. No crystal ball can replicate that clarity.
The problem is not that people are curious -- it's that they're settling for darkness when light is freely available.
The Devil Doesn't Care Why You Come -- Only That You Stay
Many claim, "It's just a game," or "It's not serious," but that's exactly how Satan works. He lures with entertainment, seduces with intrigue, and then enslaves through deception. Once the door is open, it can be hard to close -- unless Jesus intervenes.
That's why ex-occultists like Jen Nizza are sounding the alarm. They know the cost. They've lived it. And they're calling the church to wake up and speak boldly.
Because silence is not love. Truth is.
A Wake-Up Call for the Church
This is not just a "youth trend." It's a symptom of a spiritual famine in our culture -- and in our churches. We have to ask: Have we made the voice of God so hard to hear that people are turning to fortune tellers instead of Scripture? Have we replaced the prophetic Word with self-help sermons? Have we failed to warn that the occult isn't entertainment -- it's enmity with God?
The Church must recover its boldness. We must speak truth plainly: Astrology is not cute. Tarot is not harmless. Manifestation is not neutral. These are demonic counterfeits -- and they are claiming souls.
It's time to stop whispering warnings and start sounding the trumpet. The spiritual war is real, and eternity is at stake.
Hope Is Still Available
But there is hope. Jesus still breaks chains. His light still shatters darkness. And His Word is still enough for those who seek it.
If you've dabbled in these things -- even "just for fun" -- repent. Renounce it. Close the door. And run into the arms of the Savior who died to set you free.
Because when you walk with the Living God, you don't need a horoscope to know your future. You just need His Word.
And unlike the stars, His Word never changes.
Despite America's obsession with technology and progress, millions are still turning to the ancient darkness of the occult -- dismissing it all as "just for fun."
